R.I.P Rosa Parks

DETROIT - Rosa Lee Parks, whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white man sparked the modern civil rights movement, died Monday. She was 92.
Mrs. Parks died at her home of natural causes, said Karen Morgan, a spokeswoman for U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich.
Mrs. Parks was 42 when she committed an act of defiance in 1955 that was to change the course of American history and earn her the title "mother of the civil rights movement."

We have lost a true American Treasure.

Graffiti memorials

In 2003 when my ex and I moved to Bed-Stuy/Bushwick, I began a photo project (one of many) on graffiti memorials. This is a long term project, but here are a few of the shots.

"Toast to the light", 2005

I took this photo at the (former) Akwaaba Cafe in Bed-Stuy. I can't remember what I was toasting to, but pictured here looking very unamused is my beautiful friend Ngozi.

Akwaaba has since closed. I can't recall the name of it right now, but my first brunch at the "new" spot was less than tasty, and that's being kind. :-)

"Fruit of Islam Security Officer, Million More Movement, 2005

The Fruit of Islam is the Nation of Islam's official security force, better known as its paramilitary wing. In 1992, William/Abdul Sharieff Muhammad, "Supreme Captain" of the Fruit of Islam, told the Final Call, official newsletter of the NOI, "We have a military structure that we train our men into." This 'structure' provides security at all major NOI functions, guards Minister Farrakhan's mansion and also provides personal security to the Minister at his frequent public appearances, including his weekly appearance at the Mosque Maryam, the NOI's main mosque in Chicago.

In addition to the Fruit of Islam security corps, it is alleged that the NOI controls a highly organized security empire comprising some eight different businesses, responsible for patrolling state-funded housing projects.

"Lot's of Lovin'" Million More Movement, 2005

Right after I snapped this picture, my best friend remarked, "you're always aware of the small moments". I am. I'm moved by the simplicity within the complexity. Moments like this , a hug, can be fleeting or it can be hearfelt. This captured my eye, simply because I felt the woman's joy. A smothering hug from this gentleman makes her radiate, and for that moment and forever more, we are connected.
